Giveaway Wednesday :: Miercoles de Sorteo

I'm not a big fan of video games.  Never have been.  But my husband is.  (A little conflict we have here- don't you think?) Then several years back, I remember watching a commercial about this new game system that would include the whole family in the game and the best part- you would actually be active while playing.  Caught my attention.  This was also around the same time I had just delivered my second babe.  I barely remember mentioning to my hubby (the video game aficionado) that I wouldn't mind having one of those game systems in my house so I could work away all that baby fat.  Next thing you know, we have a Wii,  board and all.  And it served me well.

I would wake up every morning and work my booty off.  I did this until the little ones started to crawl all over me, really, just making it too hard to workout at home anymore.  They just thought it was funny to roll on mami while she tried to work on her yoga moves. Mami thought otherwise.  So the Wii has not been used as often since.  We've bought a few games here and there, but nothing that I really like for the kids to play, just yet.  And then I was introduced to the new Sesame Street video games.  Sesame Street: Elmo's A-to-Zoo Adventure and Sesame Street: Cookie's Counting Carnival.   (Both available for Wii, Nintendo DS and PC game systems.)   We had to try one of them out.

The kids liked it, well more like Ri really liked it.  It is still a bit to hard for A to understand the game (part of it is that the kids really don't play with the game system, so they aren't as familiar with the use of the remote).  But little Ri did get the hang of it pretty quick.

I like that it teaches children to read, rhyme, identify colors and shapes as they play and that they don't just sit there in front of the T.V. (or computer) pushing buttons.  Instead they have to swoop or sway their arms as they try to catch a letter.  It is a game we will definitely be playing (after the kids have earned their time to play), and one I am not going to be worried about its content and how it is affecting my kids development.  Well, not as much as others.

  5. I am torn when it comes to video games. My husband LOVES them and has been very good about not sacrificing family time to play them, but he still racks up 3-5 hours on them each evening after I go to bed. On one hand, I feel that they're ...a waste of time and for children, but on the other hand, I have my own guilty pleasures...why shouldn't he? There are many worse vices he could have. Now...how they affect children. Again, I am torn. When I taught, I would hear my students (3rd grade and younger) talking about the graphic, vulgar stuff they were playing. I do NOT approve. I like that they're rated, and think that if parents are monitoring their usage, they CAN have some benefit. I am very excited about game systems like Wii an the new Connect since they encourage activity. If I could convince the husband to play these Sesame Street games with my child(ren), that could be a wonderful academic bonding time for them - one that they would ALL enjoy!

  6. We love video games here. I don't play often, but we do love our Wii. The Just Dance Games has been a favorite at family parties.

  10. We have been playing wii games with our 3 and 4 year old. It has been fun them to learn to keep trying if they want to get better at something. We limit the time the girls spend on the games but we have found it to be good family fun.
