Epic: Review and Giveaway

I did not received any compensation aside from a copy of the movie for review purposes.  All words and opinions are my own.

Yes, oh yes, do I have a nice little giveaway for you, but before that let me update you a bit on what has been going on around here.

We moved.  Yes, we are officially residents of Texas.  We are still trying to sell our lovely home in VA, (crossing fingers!) and unpacking like crazy.  Unpacking can seem like such an unending task, especially moving from such a large home/property to an apartment (our temporary home until we find the house of our dreams.)  So you can just imagine how crazy our lives have been, that and getting the kids ready for school and making sure they are safe.  (More on that later.)  The important thing is that they started school Monday and they are loving it.  I'm still a bit nervous, but I know the school (and us) have done everything possible to keep my little guy safe from having any anaphalactic reactions to food that may harm him.

So on to that review shall we.

Have you seen the movie Epic yet?  Oh boy, we did when it first came out in theaters and the kids and I loved it!  And then again before the release of the movie on DVD/Blue Ray.  We fell in love with it all over again!

It's the perfect family movie.  There's plenty of action for the boys in the family, silliness to keep you laughing, and a whole lot of awesome girl power.  I like it when females are portrayed as strong and independent.  Which is the case of the main character, the forest Queen, and the young flower.  All portrayed strong willed, yet feminine.  If you look closely at some of the battle scenes you can also see some female warriors (now that is cool!  Not that I like war or anything of the sort.  But the truth is there are women warriors.  Just think of our military.)  Exactly the types of movies I like to show my kids.  I also like that, although it is a fantasy, the ending is a bit unexpected (and somewhat realistic.)

Needless to say you need to get your hands on that movie!

What was that?  What about that giveaway?  Well, that's right.  If you would like to win a DVD/Blue Ray combo courtesy of Fox Home Entertainment, leave a comment telling me what values do you instill in your child to raise her to be a strong independent female and if you have a boy to teach them to respect females? That's it! One comment please.  Make sure to include your name and an email address where I can contact you with.  Giveaway closes on Friday midnight.  Winner will be announced Monday Morning.

On the meantime how about a fun games for your little one?

Epic Bird Race (who can make the fastest folding bird?)
Can You Match That (Epic matching game)

Good luck!

The Lorax: Review & Giveaway

It is amazing to me that even though we own many (and I mean many) Dr. Seuss' books, we do not own The Lorax.  How is that even possible?  If you think that's bad, when the movie came out in theaters I had plans to take the kids.  It never happened.  Sad, I know.  Then I received an email asking if I wanted to review the movie.  Well...YEA!

Oh am I glad we did.  I loved the movie, the kids loved the movie, we all LOVED the movie!  It arrived at the most perfect time too, the day before we headed out on our one week vacation on a lovely resort up in the mountains.  Two mamas and four kids.  Yup, I sure took that DVD with us.  It came out on one of those night when the kids had had enough and so had we (to be honest).  We popped some popcorn and hit play.

The original intent was for the kids to watch it while we caught up on some vacation planing and a bit of relaxation without the kids driving us crazy, but both my friend an I ended up watching the movie along with the kids.  Keeping away from that screen was hard.  The story is a beautiful one, the message even better.

A kid with big dreams (and not a very nice family) begins to cut tree after tree.  Driven by ambition and push of his selfish family he then clears every single tree.  All gone.  In the mean time the Lorax, a cute big mustached creature, appears to him when he cuts the first tree warning him and reminding him of the importance of keeping the trees alive. The Lorax's warning and tricks don't seem to work.  Finally, after all the trees are cut, the Lorax and all the animals leave to find a new home.  Then other things begin to happen and there is a turn of events.  But I won't tell the rest, because then how fun would it be if I shared with you the entire movie? A must see really.

What was that?  You want to see it now?  I don't blame you.

Well here is a chance for you to win one of two The Lorax DVDs and activity bags, with some fun kits included.  How fun is that?!

DVD/ Blue-Ray includes three fun mini movies.

Gift bag includes:
 - 2 grocery bags (a large one for mama, and a small one for kiddos)
 - 2 pencils
 - 2 sticker sheets
 - 3 activity sheets with mazes, cut out mustache, and more!
 - 1 beach ball

 Contest Rules:

To win please leave a comment sharing with me what are the things you and your family do to make this world we live in bit greener.  Make sure to include your name and email address so I can contact you as soon as possible. Only one comment per person.  If you make a mistake make sure to delete previous entry.

Contest ends this Wednesday August 15th midnight Eastern Time!  Winners will be announced this Thursday August 16th.

That means only two days to pass the word around.  So what are you waiting for?!!  Tell your friends, tell your family.  Share. Share. Share!

¡Buena Suerte!

Disclosure:  I was sent a DVD/Blue-Ray and gift bag for review from H + M Communications.  That's it.  All  comments, thoughts and experiences are my own.

kids craft: make a play village using Kleenex boxes (and giveaway)

¡Hola!  Hope your weekend was a nice relaxing one.  We stayed indoors just about all weekend.  We read, baked cookies, watch movies together, built forts, and created!  The little ones are still fighting ear infections and colds, but for the most part they are doing much much better.

Speaking of colds...I have a confession to make.  Though we pretty much have given up on most paper goods around the house, like using cloth napkins instead of paper ones, or using rags instead of paper towels...well, in the runny nose, mucus area, we've not been able to stay away from paper tissues.  Yes, we tried, but between runny noses from colds and runny noses from seasonal allergies, handkerchiefs weren't cutting it.  Really.

And just like all the many rolls of toilet paper we accumulate and use often to create crafts, we also tend to accumulate quite a bit of tissue paper boxes.  (guilt)  To keep them from ending up in landfills I try to come with different ways of re-using the boxes.

And that is how our little village was born.

To make it all you need are empty square Kleenex boxes, construction paper, glue, scissors and your imagination.  Nice and simple!

Cover them up, or use the existing pattern to decorate your buildings.  (The two on the left where completely covered with construction paper.  The one on the right, I left the original box design and just added a few details around it.)

You can place them side by side, or stack them up creating tall buildings, lofts even.  What ever your imagination dreams.

Have fun pretending!

friends creating fun: giveaway!

Oh, it is so much fun to get together with friends and create!  That is exactly what we did this past Friday.  A bunch of us gathered our crafting goodies and crafted away at a friend's house.  All while eating some yummy treats.  Fun indeed.

See those lovely book page hearts? Aren't they lovely?  My friend Carrie was working on those to decorate her Valentine tree.  I loved them.  So I asked her if she would mind if I shared with you how to make them.  She didn't!  So guess what?   I just might have a tutorial for you soon!

My friend Rakell is another crafty one.  She was working on many little projects, including making some hair bows/clips for her girls.  She finished a handful while sitting there chatting away!

How about that necklace?  Do you like?  Well, let me confess a little something...I'VE BEEN WORKING ON THAT FOR (ahem!) OVER TWO YEARS! It's a little gift I planned to give my baby sis Pam.  Thank goodness she is a patient one.  (If your reading this sis; Do know what's coming your way?)

And did you see the lovely scarf my friend Noelle is working on?  The photo way up top?  Pretty right?  She is so talented!  Her specialty is working with re-purposed wool sweaters which she felts and then turns into beautiful wearable creations.  She also needle felts!  (Something she totally wants to teach me. ) Yup a crafty girl indeed.  Well guess what?  She has a little something to give to you!

Want to see?

It is so luxurious!

I totally want to keep it!  Don't worry I won't, because I kinda want you to win it! ;)

GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED!

To enter the giveaway:
All you have to do is visit Noelle's shop Fun, Felt & Fabulous, look around and then come back and tell me what piece you like the most.  That's it!  Giveaway is open to US resident's only.  I will select the winner using random.org.  Please only leave one comment.  If you make a mistake erase the first comment and re-post.  Giveaway is open until Friday Feb. 3rd midnight.  I will announce the winner on Monday February 6th.

school of rock-a-bye babies: album review and giveaway

We love music!  All kinds of music.  If you happen to be walking by our house (or visiting) you will hear all sort of music booming from our speakers.  From lullabies to rock en Español, from kids music to the classics like Mozart, from romantic boleros to 80's rock (hubby's favorite) ...cumbias...oldies...world music...you name it!  We love it all!  I guess you can say we have a very eclectic taste.

So when I was contacted by fellow Californian Jen Haydn-Jones, Head of US operations for School of Rock-a-bye Babies, to see if I wanted to review one of her sister's albums I jumped right in!
photo credit: Marie-Anne Ventoura for school of rock-a-bye babies.
I'm glad I did.  Elizabeth Haydn-Jones' music is wonderful, perfect for little ones to follow and dance to.  Her voice is soothing yet uplifting.

I love that she writes and composes all her songs!  She has a  much varied musical background and can play many instruments.  In fact, this particular album the kids and I reviewed, focuses on rhythm, melody and harmony as she introduces new instruments, like the violin, a guiro, the clarinet and many more.

This album is a perfect addition to our very eclectic collection, and although I know my kids are getting a bit old for some of these songs, they still enjoy them.  I have to admit though, I wish I would have known of Elizabeth and her music a lot sooner because her album would have gotten played even more than it has been.  It would also have been a perfect addition to the Music With Mommy class I use to teach (for the mom's club I am part of) when my little ones where wee little.  Needless to say, I totally recommend this album if you do teach such classes.   But if you don't and you live in London, UK or in California and would love to attend to music school for babies, toddlers and/or preschoolers, well you are in luck because they offer classes! Check out their website for more info.  You can also follow them on Facebook.

I am currently interpreting for a local school program for children with speech delays and plan to recommend this album as well.  It is perfect to use during music time, because not only is it fun to listen and dance to, but it also has many repetition of word use, sounds, and movements.

Here is a little glimpse of the first song in the School of Rock-a-bye Babies Volume 1 album:
Nice right?

GIVEAWAY CLOSED!

Now for that giveaway:
Elizabeth is graciously giving away two albums of School of Rock-a-bye Babies Volume 1 to two lucky readers.  All you have to do is leave a comment telling me why you would like to win one of her albums.  That's it!  I will select the winners using random.org.  Please only leave one comment.  If you make a mistake erase the first comment and re-post.  Giveaway is open until Friday Feb. 3rd midnight.  I will announce the winner on Monday February 6th.

Note:  The three year celebration giveaway is also still  open for a chance to win one of my romantic handmade upcycled linen brooches!

Good luck!

**Disclosure:  I will always only review things that I and my family will enjoy.  I was sent three albums, one for review and two to giveaway.  I received no compensation for this review.  All thoughts are my own.**

celebrating three years: flower brooch mini-tutorial and giveaway

Now that was a long title!

Yes, you read right, it has been three years since this baby of mine (sort-of-say) was created.  Three wonderful years of sharing bits of our lives, of sharing tutorials and recipes,  and sharing lots and lots of photos!  Like my babies I have seen it grown, slowly at times, but grown non the less.  Through this blog I have met other wonderful bloggers, some in person others through the never ending cyber world.  Through this blog I have kept a record of sorts of our lives.  And through this blog I have managed to keep myself going and inspired.  I love this little blog of mine, but what I love the most is those of you that continue to come back week after week to see what I've been up to.  Thank you, I mean it from the bottom of my heart. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

To celebrate my THIRD BLOGGIVERSARY  I have some lovely giveaways lined up for you throughout the next few days.  Starting today! But before we continue on with the giveaway, how about a mini-tutorial, shall  we?

Upcycle Flower Brooch Mini-Tutorial:

To begin, you will need to find some pieces of linen.  Look for some old linen bags, skirts, pants, sacks.  Anything that you can find that you no longer need or use would work perfect (and it'll make you feel good to create something new out of something old. Yey.)

I happened to have these bags sitting in a drawer waiting for that perfect project.  One of them held a beautiful handmade gift brought to me by a friend from Peru, the other some lovely wood toys for the kids fairy tree house.

Other materials you will need are thread, needle, die cut machine (if you have one) or a handmade stencil (if you don't), button, and brooch pin.

Once you've gathered all your materials follow the first steps from the simple embellishments tutorial, come back after you've sewn the flower together.  (Click button bellow.)

Once you've gathered your flower and added the button, begin to fray the edges:
Finally, sew the brooch pin on to the back of the flower.
 Done!  Finito!  Listo!
Now you have a beautiful vintage-look-like-up-cycle-linen brooch! (Phew!  What a mouthful.)
(you can also leave the edges untouched)

Wear it on your scarf...
Wear it on your hat...

Wear it where ever you like!

Giveaway is now closed.  Winner will be announced Monday Feb. 6th.

Now for that giveaway:
One lucky reader will win one of these linen brooches.  All you have to do is leave a comment telling me what you enjoy the most from this blog.  That's it.  I will select the winner using random.org.  Please only leave one comment.  If you make a mistake erase the first comment and re-post.  Giveaway is open until January 31st midnight.  I will announce the winner on Monday February 6th.  Good luck!

Giveaway Wednesday :: Miercoles de Sorteo

I'm not a big fan of video games.  Never have been.  But my husband is.  (A little conflict we have here- don't you think?) Then several years back, I remember watching a commercial about this new game system that would include the whole family in the game and the best part- you would actually be active while playing.  Caught my attention.  This was also around the same time I had just delivered my second babe.  I barely remember mentioning to my hubby (the video game aficionado) that I wouldn't mind having one of those game systems in my house so I could work away all that baby fat.  Next thing you know, we have a Wii,  board and all.  And it served me well.

I would wake up every morning and work my booty off.  I did this until the little ones started to crawl all over me, really, just making it too hard to workout at home anymore.  They just thought it was funny to roll on mami while she tried to work on her yoga moves. Mami thought otherwise.  So the Wii has not been used as often since.  We've bought a few games here and there, but nothing that I really like for the kids to play, just yet.  And then I was introduced to the new Sesame Street video games.  Sesame Street: Elmo's A-to-Zoo Adventure and Sesame Street: Cookie's Counting Carnival.   (Both available for Wii, Nintendo DS and PC game systems.)   We had to try one of them out.

The kids liked it, well more like Ri really liked it.  It is still a bit to hard for A to understand the game (part of it is that the kids really don't play with the game system, so they aren't as familiar with the use of the remote).  But little Ri did get the hang of it pretty quick.

I like that it teaches children to read, rhyme, identify colors and shapes as they play and that they don't just sit there in front of the T.V. (or computer) pushing buttons.  Instead they have to swoop or sway their arms as they try to catch a letter.  It is a game we will definitely be playing (after the kids have earned their time to play), and one I am not going to be worried about its content and how it is affecting my kids development.  Well, not as much as others.

And now for that giveaway! :: ¡Y ahora para el sorteo!

For a chance to win one of the video games leave a comment telling me how you feel about video games in general.  That's it, that is all you have to do.   (Please make sure to include your e-mail address so I can contact you if you win.)  Good luck!

It is official! GIVEAWAY :: ¡Es oficial! GIVEAWAY

I've been talking about it for several years now.  Thinking about it for even longer.  But for what ever reason I just didn't have the guts to do it.  You know,  start my own little business.  Until now.  And for that I have to thank several people.   (So please bare with me.)  For my  Blog Hermanas (you know who you are) they've inspired me to push forward after seeing all their energy and all they do.  Gracias! Especially Angelica from New Latina, that without knowing it, she once shared a comment with us that really stayed with me:  A friend of her's told her in response to her fear of starting a new business-  "If it scares you, than you should do it!" Well, heck I did it.  Then there is my Comadre that very straight forward told me, "Stop with all the excuses already and just go for it.  What are you waiting for?"  She's so right!  And to my lovelies for putting up with mami being occupied way more then they are use to.

Thank you!

So I did it.  I opened my own little Etsy shop!  And you are welcome to visit any time.  You will find anything from handmade aprons to felt hair clips.  It will constantly change, for I plan to make whatever my little heart is inspired by at the time.  All for you, your little ones, your friends, your family- you name it!.  And isn't this just the perfect time?  Right before the holidays?  So check it out- you can go to my little shop by clicking on either the shop link or Etsy button on the right side bar of this blog, through my Facebook fan page, or by typing http://www.etsy.com/shop/saborcajeta.

And in case you haven't figured it out by now...WE-LOVE-TO-READ!.  Not one day goes by when a book, or two- or a HUGE stack of books is read.  Our days include reading.  Our nights end reading.  So when I was asked if I was interested in reviewing Alphabet Woof, well, how could I resist?  And I was even more interested once I found out the book had been translated into Spanish.

Y por si no has adivinado...a NOSOTROS-NOS-ENCANTA-LEER!

Sopa de ¡Guau! is a cute little book about a dog that had always wanted to talk, and finds himself doing just that after he licks clean an alphabet soup spill.  After everyone's amazement (including Maxi, the dog) he is contacted by an important Hollywood TV producer and is asked to start in his own talk show.  He and his family move to Hollywood, become super duper famous, but soon Maxi realizes he misses talking...to his family.  They leave the fancy life and back home they head again where he enjoys what he always wanted to do...simply talk to his family.

The book is full of wonderfu illustrations and easy to follow.  My kids really enjoy reading it.

Alphabet Woolf is written by Sherrie A. Madia and the help of her two daughters.  How cute is that?  Here is a little interview she so graciously agreed to do.  Enjoy.

SAC: How long have you been writing for?
SM: I have been writing since I was a small child. I would entertain myself by writing down stories I heard or ideas that caught my fancy. I would keep it all in a pink pocket-sized diary that I kept by my bedside.

SAC: What inspired you to write a book for children?
SM: My children, of course. When my youngest, Anna, was quite young, we made up a story together about a dog who ate alphabet soup and then started to talk. We wrote it on a scrap of paper and I tucked it away. That was more than 10 years ago. As my girls started growing up, I was looking for a way to keep us involved in each other’s lives—so writing a children’s book together made perfect sense. We have had so much fun as a family, and we all learned a lot as well.

SAC: Why did you decide to translate it into Spanish?
SM: My background is in intercultural communications, and what many people don’t realize is how important culture is to shaping who we are and how we navigate through the world—so we don’t want to lose our heritage. I do a lot of work in communities where Spanish language is dominant for children—but the selection of books in Spanish is never ideal. So, I knew I wanted to create a book that would incorporate Spanish into story time to make the experience of a parent reading to a child even more meaningful.

SAC: Do you speak another language? Are you raising your girls bilingual?
SM: I speak Spanish, Italian and French—más o menos—none of them perfectly. I want my girls to grow up bilingual, so I incorporate Spanish in our conversations so that they will be fluent. And I practice myself all the time—my grammar needs some work. Of course, as young teenagers, my girls don’t have a lot to say to me in any language—but I continue to try!

SAC: What is a typical day in the life of Sherrie as a mama?
SM: Running, running, running! We have very full schedules and could easily go without stopping to notice one another. But I try to incorporate small touches to our days that let my girls know how much I love them. Making lunches for my girls is one way I do this. About a year ago, I started drawing small pictures and notes on their lunch bags to liven them up. I didn’t think my daughters even noticed. But when I mentioned that they may be too old for this, both girls said, “We look forward to our lunches each day and so do our friends.” So it’s the little things that make the big difference.

SAC: How do you balance work and motherhood?
SM: Very carefully. I have been a single mommy for more than a decade, and I can say from experience that timing is everything. Single parents face challenges that two-parent families do not. For example, down time is rare, and keeping work, school, and home working smoothly means always paying attention. But the trick is to remember that it’s okay if a few things don’t get done. And if things aren’t perfect, well that’s just life. Laughter is our secret weapon. On any given day—good or bad—you will hear laughter in our house. A sense of humor is like a suit of armor for whatever life will send your way. My girls know how to laugh—at themselves and at life—so I never worry.

SAC: Do you have plans to write more children books?
SM: We do! My daughters and I are working on “Moxy’s Family-Time Cookbook” which will have fun and easy recipes for the whole family—including recipes for dog treats!—we had to include our four-legged friends.

But we are most excited about our brand new book called “Bumblelina” (http://www.Bumblelina.com) which has just been released. This is a book about a tiny bee who wishes she could fly—and learns the importance of trying. The book is illustrated with black and white sketches and just one hidden spot of color on each page, which we think children will find especially fun.

Like “Alphabet Woof!” a portion of the sale of Bumblelina goes to support the SPCA International, so we can continue to help animals in need.
