Friday Favoritas: In the Backyard

Where we live, it is not uncommon to find these lovely creatures wondering around the back yards of homes.  We were at the grandparent's house in the city (not their farm house) gathering and conversing in the den, when all of a sudden a family of deer decided to wonder around the back yard.  Breathtaking.

Finally... I am Back!

Yes I am!  It has been well over a month since I had been having trouble with some suppose malware on my site.  Definitely annoying, especially not being able to figure things out on my own.  I don't know if I ever mentioned this before, but I have never taken any web design classes.  I have learned it all on my own, as I go.  I usually can figure things out, but this time after several attempts at clearing my site from said malware I was stuck.  Luckily a friend of our was able to help me out and get this lovely space of mine (that I've missed so much) cleared of anything that may have been (but wasn't) malicious.

So I am officially back.  I have so much to share with you plus a bit late review and giveaway I have for you.  So come on back Monday and check it out.  And yes, please do not be afraid to visit my lovely site, it all has been cleared.

Happy to be back, happy to share, and happy to read your lovely comments.

Unexpected

While clipping away the flowering buds from my herbs, and as I grasped them in a bunch, I admired how beautiful the parsley buds looked before they bloomed.  They reminded me of fireworks.  So I gathered them, brought them in, and placed them on my windowsill.  Such beauty in the unexpected.

Listening to Her

(First photo taken my Mr. Sabor a Cajeta)

Of late my life has been in a bit of a haze and my mind preoccupied with just too many thoughts.  When life gets this way, I tend to unwillingly and unconsciously give up on some things and I realize I just have to let go to find some balance.  But when letting go means my  four year old daughter, well, then I am in big trouble.

You see, she's a spunky little one, a kind hearted soul, a dare devil, and a stubborn little one as well and boy can she have a temper (kind of like her mama), but the truth is it is not often we see that temper, because for the most part she's an easy going child.

So when the tempers and whinnying started to increase I knew something was wrong.  It took me a while thought to figure this out, with my life being in a haze and all, but after talking over the phone with my dear mami yesterday and explaining (or more like complaining) about my spunky little one's behavior...I realized what I had known all along.

You see, I believe that all children act upon what is going on in their surrounding.  I believe that if we truly stop to listen we can hear loud and clear what they are not telling us.  Especially when a child is a well behaved one.  I also believe that as a parent it is the quality not the quantity of time we spend with our children that is important.  For example, if a parent works all day and can only spend a few hours a day with his child, but truly is present during those few hours, than that is giving a child as much as a parent that may spend all day with said child.  Same goes for the opposite.  If a parent spends all day with his child, but isn't truly present in mind and soul, then that child might as well be alone.

That is what I heard loud and clear the last few times she misbehaved.  I have been here with her day after day (aside from the few hours a week I leave to work), but I haven't truly be giving her the attention she very well deserves.  I have not been fully present.

Yesterday after work (and after talking to my mami) I decided to do just that.   I stopped all and spend a full uninterrupted hour with my spunky girl.  I made a mental point to put all worries and to do lists aside and to focus on her and what she wanted to do.  So we headed out doors, rocked on the hammock, talked and talked, played on the swing set, and explored our back yard.  She and I.  Fully present.  Fully enjoying myself.

It is what she needed, but truth be told, it is also what I needed.

Thank you chiquita for reminding me to stop and listen and to take in all the beautiful world around us through your eyes.  I promise to take the time every day.  You deserve that much and more.

Te quiero mucho!

beautiful

How beautiful it is to see tulips opening up...and once seedlings, now becoming tiny little plants that soon enough will be growing into delicious veggies to fill our tummies.  Life is beautiful.

Our best friends... ♥ Nuestros amigos favoritos...

...Since we got hit with tornado Irene this past Saturday.  We are on day four of no power.  We are all okay. Thank Goodness.  No major damages, other than two fallen pine trees and the loss of power.

Amazingly the kids are loving the "blackout adventure" as they call it.  This makes it so much easier on their mami and papi.

If you were also hit by the tornado I hope you are doing well.

time to slow down ♥ momentos tranquilos

I've been told time and again that I have a type A personality.  You know- alway-running-around-everything-needs-to-be-in-order-fills-the-calendar-with-every-event-possible-kind-of-person.  I've been told many times that I need to slow down.  And I have, really I have.  Before I got married and moved to lovely Virginia, my life in Southern California was full of running around.  To school, to work, to the gym, to visit family and friends.  I skipped meals, slept late and woke early.  (Gees I get all that stress back just thinking about it.)

Me pasaba comidas, dormía tarde y madrugaba.

Slowing down has not been easy.  I've had to learn.  At first the way of life here was just a bit to slow pace for me.  Seriously!  But with time I began to enjoy the slower pace and the free time I found in my hands.  I worked, and painted and took up photography once more.  And I let go of my watch!  You know the kind you wear around your wrist.  No more attachment to time.  I felt free.

Trabajaba, pintaba y volví a empezar a tomar mas fotos. Me sentía libre.

Then the kids were born.

Y luego nacieron mis pequeños.

Slowly but surely my life began to get filled again with "this" and "that's" to do.  My once not-so-full-calendar, began to get full again.  With play dates, soccer practice, gymnastic classes, dance practice, swimming lessons,  the list goes on.  My days full of laundry, dishes, cooking, hugging, kissing,  caring,  cleaning,  and more loads of laundry.

But it has also been the kids that have reminded me of the importance of slowing down.  Just this past week, when I found myself running around taking the kids to camp and doing the usual errands, house chores, and finding some time to blog, when the kids asked to go to the park.

"The park?  It is too hot! and I have too many things to do."

"Please mami?"

- ¿Por favor mami?-

"Fine."

- Bueno pues.-

 Am I glad we did.

Que bueno que lo hicimos.

While the kids played and ran around the park, and after I took some photos, I decided to take out an old sketch book I had not opened in many years...

I came across the two pencil drawings above (and many other sketches).  I drew these on the last road trip my parents, sisters and I took to Mazatlan Mexico, from Southern California and across western Mexico.  It was a fun trip.  Note the year? 1998.  After that the sketches became far and few.  There were some of wedding dress ideas (I made my own), brides maid dresses for my best friend's wedding, and sketches of clothing ideas that I had if one day I started my own clothing line.  The dreamer in me.

After flipping through the pages and going down memory lane I started a new sketch.  Around the same time the kids decided to join me in the fun.

Here is what I came up with:

Esto fue lo que dibuje:

Can you tell I have kids now?  Seriously!  But I had fun, and it also stirred up inside of me that urge to draw once more.  I think the last time I actually drew/painted something was when I was decorating my little nene's nursery over five years ago.  On one of his walls I painted children dressed in traditional costumes from around the world and also painted two large canvas signs that say, "Buenas" (good) & "Noches" (night.)

¡Ja!

Anyhow, had it not been for the kids and taking the time to sit still and slow down, I would have not opened that sketchbook.

This also made me realize that I do schedule my self  too much to do.  And even when I am at home I find myself doing- cleaning, organizing, working on the so dreaded laundry, gardening and so on.  That is why at times you won't hear from me here in this lovely space of mine.  I look around and have multiple of projects waiting to be finished or started.  I want to do it all, and the reality is that  I CAN'T!  I have to be true to my self and also good to my self and let go (something else I've had to learn and am constantly working on.)

I know I've asked this several times but,  HOW DO OTHER BLOGGER/CRAFTERS FIND THE TIME?

Se que he preguntado lo siguente varias veces, pero...¿COMO LE HACEN OTRAS BLOGUERAS PARA ENCONTRAR EL TIEMPO?

HOW DO THEY BALANCE IT ALL?
¿COMO ENCUENTRAN EL BALANCE?

And so this weekend I decided we would take it slow.  No going and coming, no running around, no anything (other than dance class).  I slept in (as much as I can with two little early risers), took it easy, only did a few loads of laundry, played with the kids, worked on the garden and made a chocolate cake (using the recipe in Apples for Jam) for my hubby's birthday.  Nice and slow.

Still no time to paint though, but I did manage to add some more items to the Sabor a Cajeta shop.  I will find the time.  I will take the time to slow down more often.

As I was weeding this weekend I came to the realization that gardening also allows for me to slow down and take it all in. To take notice of what is around me, not only the food we are growing but the trees, the birds,  the squirrels and bugs (yes bugs) that I might not other wise noticed.  In some ways gardening as well as the tedious task of weeding has become a sort of meditation.  If only for a little while I become one with nature.  How I love that.  When I walk back into the house, things seem a bit more manageable.  I am calmer.  Who knew I would one day find pleasure in weeding.  Life is unexpected like that.

Me encanta.

Wishing you  find some time to slow down this week.
