busy week ending with birthday fun

Last week was a busy, very busy, week for us:
La semana pasada nos la pasamos super ocupados:

::Hubby and I celebrated our 8th anniversary (yey! Love you honey).
:: My esposo y yo celebramos nuestro octavo aniversario de matrimonio. (Yey! Te quiero amor.)


:: Ri had his first preschool sport camp experience, and loved it.
:: Ri fue a su primer campamento de deportes y le encanto.

:: And I spent most of the week sewing aprons like crazy. (Remember these?) Why? 'Cuz I AM crazy! No, seriously now, I made 18 of them as party favors for our-first-ever-combined-birthday-batch for my nenes (lovelies). The party was last weekend.
:: Y yo me la pase toda la semana cosiendo mandiles como loca. (¿Te acuerdas de estos?). ¿Por que? ¡Por que lo estoy! Jajaja, no enserio, cosí 18 mandiles como regalo para todos los niños invitados a nuestra primera-fiesta-celebrando-los-cumpleaños de mis dos nenes juntos. La fiesta fue este fin de semana pasado.

Aprons as party favors? Yup. It was an art theme party. A fun one I might add. Hot, super hot (breaking heat records around here), but fun. Instead of baggies full of treats I decided to give each child an apron to use during the party and then take home for keeps.
¿Mandiles como regalos? Claro que si, pues la fiesta fue con tema de arte. Y les cuento que muy divertida. Caliente, super caliente (estamos rompiendo récord de temperatura por aca), pero al fin de cuentas divertido.

This was our first year combining Ri's and A's birthdays. Something we had been thinking about for a long time. My uncle does this and I love the idea. We have never been able to have our party outdoors because of the seasons my kids were born in, Ri in late winter and A in late fall, so it either rains, snows or it is just too darn cold to be outdoors. I love our back yard, it is perfect for parties, so why not combined them and have them in the summer? Has anyone ever done this? It really is great. Think about it, you spend $ and time organizing for just one party, get all the friends over and have lots and lots of fun!
Este fue nuestro primer año combinando los cumpleaños de Ri y A. Y teníamos tiempo pensando en hacerlo. Un tío mio tiene tiempo haciéndolo, y me encanta la idea. Nunca hemos tenido la oportunidad de tener las fiestas afuera en el jardín por que Ri nacio a principios de primavera y A a fines de otoño y el clima nos toca ya sea lluvioso, nieva o hace muchisimo frió para estar afuera. Me encanta nuestro jardin, es perfecta para tener fiestas. Por eso decidimos celebrar sus cumpleaños juntos en el verano. ¿Has echo algo parecido? La verdad que me encanto. Piensalo, gastas $ y tiempo organizando solo una fiesta, juntas a todos los amigos y listo ¡a divertirse!

This was also the first time we had a piñata (we tried before, but it rained on us). You should of seen the faces of excitement on all the little ones waiting to hit the piñata. Some were scared at first, but once they got the hang of it, it was all FUN.
Tambien fue la primera vez que rompimos piñata (si ya se lo que han de estar pensando. Les juro que tratamos antes, pero nos llovió). Hubieran visto las caritas de emoción mientras los chiquitos esperaban su turno para romper la piñata. Algunos tenían un poco de miedo al principio, pero una vez que le agarraron, se divirtieron.


I find it very interesting that when I was a child, pretty much every birthday party I attended had a piñata, here where we live now, I've only been to one. I guess it is not as common. Not any more, we are going to make it a tradition, piñata every year (just not the one we bought- was it hard to break! The only thing that broke was the hanging loop. Even the mamas tried and nothing, finally I just hit the darn thing -while it lay on the floor- until I made a hole and let the candy fall. They sure make them a lot sturdier then they use to.)
Se me hace muy interesante que cuando yo era niña a casi toda fiesta que hiva havia piñata, a qui donde vivimos, solo hemos ido a una con piñata. No es muy comun. Pero ya no pues sera nuestra tradición, romper piñata cada año (pero no la que compramos ¡no! La mentada estaba super difícil de quebrar, lo único que se quebró fue la agarradera. Hasta las mamis tomamos turno en tratar de romperla y nada. Al ultimo opte por pegarle mientras estaba en el piso y luego deje caer los dulces. Definitivamente las hacen mucho mas macizas que antes.)

One of the things I liked the most about this party was that we asked everyone not to bring a gift. You heard right. No gifts! Instead we collected money for the Make a Wish Foundation. This seriously felt good. My little ones really don't need any more toys, and we have been blessed with health, a roof, and lots of wonderful family and friends.
Una de las cosas que mas me gusto de la fiesta fue que les pedimos a todos los invitados que no trajeran regalos. Si leíste bien. No regalos! Mejor colectamos dinero para el Make a Wish Foundation. Que lindo se sintió. Mis nenes no tienen necesidad de mas regalos, y gracias a Dios tenemos nuestra salud, un hogar, y mucha linda y maravillosa familia y amigos.

Why the Make a Wish Foundation and not another organization? Well, this organization is very close to my heart. One of my uncles died of cancer at the young age of 14 (I was about 12), and I remember that his one wish was to become a music D.J. He got his wish. The Make a Wish Foundation got him the equipment to be an actual D.J. to play all the music he wanted at parties and dances. Even after his death he was always present whenever my other uncles used his equipment at all the family events. Memories.
¿Por que el Make a Wish Foundation y no alguna otra organización? Bueno, porque esta organización me llega la corazón. Uno de mis tíos murió a la corta edad de 14 años a causa del cáncer (yo tenia como 12), y recuerdo que su gran deseo era ser D.J. de musica. Su deseo se cumplió cuando el Make a Wish Foundation le regalo el equipo necesario para tocar música. Hasta después de su muerte el siempre estaba presente cada vez que mis otros tíos (sus hermanos) tocaban el equipo en reuniones familiares. Recuerdos.

We do have plans to continue the NO GIFT tradition, at least until the kids start complaining about it, but my hopes are that the hubby and I will do a good job explaining to them how special it is to give instead of receive. And really, it doesn't mean they won't get any gifts at all. They have other opportunities throughout the year for presents.
Tenemos planes de continuar con esta tradición de no regalos, por lo menos hasta que los nenes empiecen a quejarse, pero espero que nunca suceda y mi esposo y yo hagamos un buen trabajo en explicarles el por que es mas especial en dar que en recibir. Y si lo piensan bien, no significa que nunca recibirán regalos, siempre hay otras oportunidades durante el año.

green gift giving :: envolviendo regalos con nuestro planeta en mente

Living greener has been something we work on every day in our home. We have gone from using paper napkins to cloth, from using paper towels to rags, we recycle everything and anything possible, we have changed our cleaning supplies to earth friendly ones (someday I even plan to try and make my own laundry and dish detergent), we try not to use any paper goods, we plant a lot of our own veggies and fruits, we shop local and/or organic, the list goes on...and yet there is so much more we can do.
Vivir mas "verde" (como decimos por acá en los Estados Unidos) es algo en lo que trabajamos todos los días aquí en nuestra casa. Poco a poco hemos cambiado de servilletas de papel a servilletas de tela, en vez de usar toallas de papel usamos trapos, reciclamos todo lo que se puede, hemos cambiado nuestros productos de la limpieza a productos echos mas naturales (con decirles que tengo planes para el futuro de hacer mi propio detergente para la ropa y jabón de los trastes), tratamos de no usar platos, vasos y otras cosas desechables, plantamos muchas de nuestras verduras y fruta, compramos local y/u orgánico, la lista continua...y siento que todavía nos falta mucho mas por hacer.

One of those things is how I wrap my gifts. Well I tell ya, I love, love, love wrapping paper, gift bags and tissue. But then, isn't that just a waste of paper? And then I saw this savvy little gift bag made out of old shipping envelopes. In a recently new magazine called Green Craft. I loved it. I made it. In fact, I've made a handful since. To be exact- The kids and I have made them. They love to stamp and add stickers. I use either old ribbon or a long scrap of fabric for the handle and Ta Da! The bag is done. Simple and unique and each one is decorated according to what the recipient likes.
Una de esas cosas es como envuelvo mis regalos. Les cuento que a mi me gusta- me encanta- comprar papel para envolver, bolsas y papel de china. Pero, no creen que es una desperdicio? Pues sepan que encontré en la revista Green Craft una gran idea, donde usan sobres de correo para hacer bolsas de regalo. Me encanto. Las hice. Con decirles que he echo varias. Mejor dicho, mis nenes y yo hemos echo varias. A ellos les encanta estampar y añadirles calcamonias. Y yo después las termino añadiéndoles agarraderas de liston o echas de algún retazo de tela ¡ Y listas! Sencillas y únicas, cada una decorada según el gusto de la persona que la va a recibir.
Cards are another way to be green. As you know I like to make my own if possible. Well, one of the things I love to use to make kids gift cards are my kids art work. I don't know about you, but I often find myself overwhelmed by the amount of artwork my kids manage to create and thought I would love to save each and every piece, it is just not realistic, so instead I pick and choose the ones to keep, date and save for them and the rest I turn into cards (or other projects).
De la otra manera que trato de vivir mas verde es al hacer mis propias tarjetas ya sea de cumpleaños o para cualquier otra ocasión. Una de las cosas que mas me gusta usar son los dibujos o pinturas que mis hijos han creado. No se si a ti te suceda, pero los míos crean un montón, que aunque me gustaría guardar cada uno, no se puede. Es que lo que hago es después de escoger, fechar y guardar todos los que si quiero guardar para el futuro, los que quedan los uso para las tarjetas (u otros proyectos).

strawberries :: fresas

My freeze is full of them, in separate little freezer bags ready to be transformed into a nice cold smoothy.
Mi congelador esta lleno de ellas, guardadas en bolisitas listas para transformarlas en un rico licuado.

This strawberry season at one of the local orchards was just great. The strawberries- red and sweet as can be. Yum!
Esta temporada de fresas en una de las huertas locales fue muy buena. Las fresas- rojas y super dulces. ¡Rico!

For the first time I tried making my own freezer jam. I used the recipe from the Ball recipe book. Let's see how they turn out. I'm still a bit of a chicken when it comes to canning. I have everything to do it, I just get scared and end up freezing instead. I guess I better get the nerve soon, because our backyard is full of tomatoes, chiles, peppers and much more and soon enough they will be ready for us to enjoy and for me to CAN!
Por primera vez de hacer mi propia mermelada para congelar. Use la receta del libro de recetas Ball. A ver como me salen. Todavía me da miedo de enlatarlas en vapor. Y les cuento que tengo todo para hacerlo, pero me da no se que. Tendré que tratarlo pronto pues nuestra huerta en el jardín esta repleta de tomates, chiles, pimientos y mucho mas y cuando menos lo espere estarán listos para cosechar, saborear y para ENLATAR!

The kids helped. Can you tell? Gotta love those upside down labels. And just in case you didn't know already, I found out that it is great to use the egg slicer to slice the strawberries. Seriously it is so easy that Ri was able to help me. I would just cut off the stem and he would do the rest.
Los nenes me ayudaron. Notaron? Me encantan como pusieron las etiquetas todas chuecas. Y por si no lo sabían, descubrí que el rebanador para huevos es perfecto para también rebanar las fresas. Enserio, es tan fácil de usar que Ri me pudo ayudar. Yo les cortaba el tallo a las fresas y el cortaba lo demás.


Of course after all that hard work we had to have a nice cold smoothy.
Y claro que después de tanto trabajo terminamos con un rico licuado.

There are millions of ways you can make a strawberry smoothy. Alone or combined with other fruit friends they always taste great.
Hay un millon de maneras de como hacer un licuado de fresa. Solo o ya sea combinado con alguna otra fruta, siempre saben riquisimo.

Here is a quick recipe of the one we made the other day.
Aquí, una receta sencilla del que hicimos el otro dia. (ver abajo de la receta en ingles)

Strawberry Banana Smoothy
2 cups of fresh or frozen strawberries.
1 nice ripe banana
1 cup of organic vanilla yogurt
1/2 cup of organic milk (2%)
1 to 2 tablespoon of honey

Licuado de Fresa con Plátano
2 tazas de fresas frescas o congeladas.
1 plátano bien maduro
1 taza de yogurt organico de sabor a vainilla
1/2 taza de leche organica (2%)
1 o 2 cucharadas de miel

Blend all well together and enjoy!
Licuar todo junto y a ¡disfrutar!

a tourist in miami :: turistiando en miami

One of the things that I loved most about Miami was the beach. There is just something about digging your feet in the warm sand, sun hitting your body and the cool breeze of the ocean floating in the air. The water. What beautiful clear blue water. Nice and cool. How I loved the beach.
Una de las cosas que mas me encanto de Miami fue su playa. Que ricura sentir la arena entre los dedos de los pies, el sol caliente rosando la cara y el aire fresco del mar flotando por el aire. El agua. Que preciosa, tan cristalina y azul.





The buildings are also amazing. As you look around you know you are in Miami, just by looking at the architecture. Colorful yet soothing colors everywhere. South Beach is full of them.
Los edificios también están increíble. Al ver a tu alrededor sabes al instante que estas en Miami por su arquitectura. Todo colorido, pero a la vez los colores son suave y tranquilos. South Beach esta lleno de ellos.




I hope that in the near future I am able to go back and this time with family in tow. That way I can truly explore and experience life in Miami.
Espero algún día pueda regresar con toda mi familia, para a si poder explorar y conocer en verdad como es la vida de Miami.

On another note. Remember my unexpected shopping spree? Well, I got to Miami but somehow my luggage was sent to Chicago. Yea I know, you are probably thinking: Why didn't she take a carry on? I did (or so I thought) until they told me it was to big to carry it on the plane. Agh!. I even teased with my husband saying, "Wouldn't it be funny if the fist time I don't have an extra change of clothe with me they loose my luggage?" I totally jinks my self. So you see I had nothing to wear, but what I had on, and that evening I had a media/blogger dinner to attend for the Que Rica Vida event. Fortunately I arrived to Miami early enough that I was able to go to a nearby Ross, where I found the dress (and another cute one as well. Shhh, don't tell the hubby. Wait, he reads this. Darn). The fun red patten leather Itialian wedges I got at this really cute chic shoe shop called Taha Shoes in Bayside Market place. The prices in there were well, high, and I was lucky enough to find them on sale. Yey! And like my comadre Lucia said, "It's not every day you get to do that." Darn right! Ha. So I also picked up some coordinating jewelry from one of the smaller outdoor vendors. Four beautiful glass pendants and necklace.
Cambiando de tema un poco. Recuerdan que les conté de mis compras inesperadas? Pues todo sucedió cuando yo llegue a Miami y mi equipaje no (andaba por Chicago). Ya se lo que has de estar pensando: Por que no se llevo una maletita extra con ropa de emergencia en el avión? Claro que si. Bueno eso creía hasta que me dijeron que mi maleta estaba muy grande para poder subirla al avión. No! Con decirles que hasta bromee con mi esposo diciéndole, -No mas falta que ahora que no traigo mi maletita de emergencia me la pierdan.- Para que hable! Hay no, pues ni que ponerme y esa noche tenia que asistir a una cena para los medios y bloguers del evento Que Rica Vida, y la única ropa que tenia es la que traía puesta. Afortunadamente llegue a Miami con bastante tiempo. Me fui a una tienda que se llama Ross que quedaba cerca y encontré un lindo vestido (bueno dos, pero no le digan a mi maridin. Hay no, el lee el blog. Hijole, ni modo!) También encontre unos padrisimos zapatos Italianos de charol color rojo en una curiosa y elegante zapateria que se llama Taha en el Bayside Marketplace. Los precios estaban medio caritos, afortunadamente el par que compre estaba en especial. Yey! Y ademas como dijo mi Comadre Lucia, -No todos los días te pasa esto.- Muy cierto amiga! Jajaja. Y para finalisar el ensamble compre unos preciosos collares de vidrio y en uno de los puestesitos de afuera.

By the way, my adventure with disappearing luggage didn't stop there. They also lost in on my way back home.
A propósito, mi aventura con el equipaje perdido no termino ahí. Ah no. También me lo perdieron al regresar a casa.
